March, 2010 ~ The Revolutionary Poets Brigade
Thinkers, border fighters and beatboxers, funk wailers and hip hop healers; dada tunes and videoscapes. It will be a night of expansion and if you don't have any idea what all of that meant you are just going to have come and see what it's all about.
Flavorpill write-up:
The Cat’s Pajamas, a monthly mash-up of cabaret and performance art at the Make-Out Room, is celebrating the evolution of revolution. The Revolutionary Poets Brigade will spit propaganda poetry, and showgirl troupe the Bombshells (where fingerless gloves meet jazz hands) will high-kick some skulls with their punk rock routine. Other highlights include songbird Xandra, post-mod musician Andy Warthol, queer beatboxer Sam Sax, and video artist Nate Pagel. It’ll be a forward-thinking night. Long live the proletariat!
Performers:
The Revolutionary Poets Brigade:They are a group of powerhouse poets who have battled the decades in search of meaning and truth. They walk their talk and are still invested in breaking this world wide open so that we can begin to live with a genuine justice. They prove that beautiful and vibrant words can actually make a difference. Jack Hirschman, Agneta Falk, Sharon Dubiago, David Meltzer, Dottie Payne, Neely Cherkovsky, Mark Kockinos, Chrissy Moore, Rosmary Mano, Devorah major, Christine Brown, Francesco Dominquez, Francisco Orrego, Cameron McHenery : Sarah Menefee : Jorge Molina : Alejandro Murguia : Arthur Sheridan : Cathleen Williams and more.
Xandra: The lead singer of that amazing group Con brio also does her own solo pieces that are evolutionary, powerful and profoundly moving. They also get the blood flowing with their funk fab.
Andy Warthol: An experimental musician of technology. His beats are revolutionary, his style is post-modern and his way is infinitely forward thinking. His music is created in the moment to evoke the spirit of the crowd and of the age.
The Bombshells: Oi! The Bombshells are a San Francisco-based punkrock showgirl troupe. Think the Rockettes meet the Suicide Girls. Fringe meets combat boots. Fingerless gloves meet jazz hands.
Proudly named after the Operation Ivy song 'Bombshell,' the troupe performs cabaret, showgirl, and burlesque-inspired moves to classic punk, post-punk, ska, and ska-core songs.
As with all things punk, The Bombshells shows often offer political and social commentary, but fuse this irreverence with sweet showgirl flair, fringe, and feathers.
Nate Pagel: Artist extraordinaire whose captivating video scapes will be shown as part of the evening's gala to highlight the more essential and emotive aspects of the revolution.
Sam Sax: Street, queer, brilliant, beat box, bad ass and knows how to make words sing.
Nkechi Live!
February 2010 ~ Shanghai Shanty
'Shanghai Shanti' for a celebration of all things shark related. Once, a long time ago, young fellows who laid on the sauce too heavily ran the risk of ending up on a boat bound for Shanghai. An adventure sure, but a kind of hang over few would ask for. Thankfully, in these modern times, we get to choose to be shanghaied by wailing widows, pirates, sea farers, Raspy blues men who know how to roll, and a wee bit of Gospel Shanty.
Performers: James Morrill: Young, Hot, and oh so talented, this underground sea monster of a man will be bringing you harped waves, Shark poems and a little bit of sweetness from the deep.
Barbary Ghosts: Three castaways washed up on the shores of San Francisco telling tales of whiskey, women, and mutiny on the high sea. Having no boat and no money, they took to playing the dives, dance halls, and street corners of the Barbary Coast. The rest is history...Joan - button accordion, fiddle, tin whistle, singing; Shawn Magee- guitar, singing, Jason - fiddle They will shanghai us for sure!
Cody Giannotti:R. Cody Giannotti, M.F.A. is a Vocalist, Multi-Instrumentalist, Beatboxer, Experimental Musician, Composer, Poet/Writer, Director, Sound/Film Designer, Photographer, Activist, Educator and Producer repping the Mission in San Francisco, CA. And he is a sweet man about town employing every art and pirating hearts wherever he goes.
John Beard: A poetic comedian who has been known to talk about sharks.
Sammy Franco: Roller Skating Shark
Ashif Hakik: A man who takes songs you think you know and gives them an entirely new twist and what a voice! He was a pirate in a past life.
Vanessa Morrison( No relation): In her wild and passionate diversity, Vanessa is truly that rare artist who would make Al Green, Utah Phillips and Johnny Cash feel right at home. Once with Rock Me Pony, She now plies her skills in service of Music National Service that honors the work of MLK jr. and believes that Music itself played an important role in inspiring Americans from all walks of life to join the civil rights movement.
The Seth Augustus Band with Vic Wong: After haunting the outer-lands of San Francisco’s music world for the better part of two decades,Seth Augustushas emerged with a fully realized sound and perspective that seems to exist outside of time and the limits of geography. Coarse and primitive textures, pre-war blues, hypnagogic tales told over tangos by midnight buskers, Seth’s own sinister-electrified guitar and a stripped down drum kit mingle with the rhythms of early American folk and jazz and the cadences of carnival sounds. A Perhaps the music of Seth Augustus was not meant to be recorded, but played into the night under giant tents, to congregations of the afflicted and those yearning for deliverance.
January 2010~Spiderdance Cabaret
Sex Work!? Like it? Hate It? Always wondered what it's all about and especially wondered what Agneta Falk might say about it? Well January is your chance to ask those questions and to enjoy a show while you do it.
The Cat's Pajamas is a monthly cabaret featuring spoken word, music, dance, and performance art acts that are an ode to the cultural aesthetics of the past. This month join us for "The Spiderdance Cabaret" our ode to the intellectual, decadent and politically charged cabarets of the 1920's Weimar culture. In honor of Lola Montez and underground of Sin City, this cabaret will explore the terrors and triumphs of the sex industry. Come and join us for a hot debate and some wild expression.
Poetry Feature: Agneta Falk is one of the most vital poets to have contributed to the underground and literary culture of San Francisco. Her many performances over the years feeding the evolution of our Beyond Beat sensibilities are too many to list. We are honored to have such a luminary perform her work speaking to the issues of sex trafficking and women's sexual identity at the Cat's Pajamas.
Sanxe Loveji: Indian but raised in London, his first break was as a VJ/performer on Britain's premiere Bhangra TV show: RHYTHM and RAAG. But according to him, his greatest moment of fame was performing at Peter Gabriel's WOMAD festival. Blending High Camp, naughtiness, traditional Indian vocal rhythms and at times, yodeling, Sanxe gives a unique performance that will tease your smile and raise the hair on your arm. He is not to be missed and you will count yourself lucky if you give him a reason to laugh.
Sex Worker Performers: Representing the other side of this hot debate will be a few folks from the industry sharing their myriad talents.
Dimestore Divas: A three woman burlesque troupe who has put the "Gutter" back in "Guttersnipe". Wild, sexy and so much fun they will make this recession seem like a gift from the gods.
John Smalley: An avant garde opera singer, musician and teacher who has won numerous fellowships and regulafly delights his neighbors with the unusual but beautiful low tones of his singing style. His passion is bringing together the understanding of languages, community, education and performance to celebrate classical music in new settings. Especially those composers like Eric Satie, Kurt Wiel and John Cage whose music has not been performed as much as it should. He makes this music as relevant now as it was when it shocked audiences all those years ago.
Elo-Mall Toomet: A poet who has performed all over the country and is back again all the way from Estonian for a mad week of reading. She believes that misfit have wings.
The Cheese Puffs: The world's first Richard Cheese-inspired burlesque troupe. We are coufrting these fine and feisty dancers who have taken Sin City by storm and if we are very lucky they will grace us with their dynamic presence.

OCTOBER 26TH, 2009
"DiscoWarriors", an ode to 1970's recession New York. What does that mean you ask? Well think Afros, clown gangs in rollar skates, mohawks, men with bling, graffitti, and some kick ass down and dirty beats. We are going to be getting down with our punk selves and we want you to come and play even as the world is trashing down. The 70's most often make people think of leisure suits and key parties but in fact that decade was the most intense political evolution of the last century. Integration in schools, money for art programs, Sesame Street and the Electric Company, the women's rights movement, civil rights legislation, the emergence of hip hop and DIY music, CBGB's and raw, hard hitting political film. Whew! We will be taking all that into account and having fun at the same time, so get your disco swish on. After the show we will be having a dance party.

The Cat's Pajamas ~ Fireside Fab
December 28th, 2009
After that pesky tree business and right before we all get toasty on champagne there will be The Cat's Pajamas Story Telling session. Come and join us for some hot music, some wild stories and just a little bit of that cozy intimacy that comes from hearing people speak their tale. Luke Warm Water, Dusty Rose, Con Brio, Chantelle Tibbs, Vincent Luis Carrella, Daniel Meckenzie, Bethany Rose...I should call it the night of the roses."
The Cat's Pajamas is a monthly cabaret featuring spoken word, music, dance, and performance art acts that are an ode to the cultural aesthetics of the past. This cold month join us for “Fireside Fab”, a night of story telling and winsome music. Storytelling is the oldest form of entertainment and has recently been brought back to the stage as a popular art form. We are re-creating the intimacy and delight of enjoying someone’s words, histories and expressions, as they exist in the moment. Marc Kockinos of Poets for Human Rights will be co-hosting the event That will feature:
Daniel Michael Mckenzie: Native American Poet/Storyteller/Vietnam Vet/ 'retired' Hells Angel, who partied with Jim Morrison and lived to tell the tale.
Bethany Rose: Poet/Singer of wicked charm who describes herself as, “just a girl with a couple of big dreams”.
Vincent Louis Carrella: Poet and Novelist, author of 'serpent box.'
In the deep mountains of Appalachia, the Flints of Leatherwood, Tennessee, spread the word of the gospels by handling deadly serpents and drinking lye in front of large gatherings of the faithful. Believing his ten-year-old son Jacob—called Toad or Spud—to be a prophet, Charles, the patriarch, takes the boy down a long and arduous path as they travel the back roads of the postwar Deep South in search of God and plumb the depths of their unorthodox brand of faith.
Luke Warm Water: An Oglala Lakota, born and raised in Rapid City, South Dakota. He writes within the context of contemporary American Indian life, especially within urban communities and is not afraid to bring you closer to the truth.
